🚴 Handlebar Width: Narrower, Wider… or Just Right?🤔
Handlebars have quietly changed a lot over the last few years.
On the road side, bars are gettingnarrower.
In gravel and mountain biking, they’re gettingwider. So which one is right?
Like most things in bike fitting — it depends on what you’re trying to do.
Road Cycling: Why Bars Are Getting Narrower
The shift toward narrower bars on road bikes is largely aboutaerodynamics.
When you bring your hands in, you reduce your frontal area. At higher speeds, aerodynamic drag makes up the majority of resistance you’re fighting — often80–90% once you’re moving fast on flat ground.Small reductions in width can reduce drag and improve efficiency.
Wind tunnel testing consistently shows that narrowing arm position reduces coefficient of drag area, which translates to measurable time savings over long distances.
That said — narrower isn’t automatically better.
If bars are too narrow:
Breathing can feel restricted
Shoulders and neck can tighten up
Wrist angle may become awkward
Control during sprints or descents can feel unstable
For many recreational riders, going excessively narrow creates more tension than speed.
Gravel & Mountain: Why Wider Works
Off-road riding is different. Stability matters more than aerodynamics.
Wider bars:
Increase steering leverage
Improve control on descents
Research in cycling biomechanics shows that wider hand positions increase steering control but also increase upper body muscle activation. That means more control — but also potentially more shoulder and hand fatigue if width is excessive.
Gravel bars with flare are a compromise:
Narrower on the hoods for aero
Wider in the drops for stability
That’s smart design — when it matches the rider.
The Old Rule: “Match Shoulder Width”
For years, riders were told to match handlebar width to acromion-to-acromion shoulder width.
That’s a starting point— not a rule.
Your ideal bar width depends on:
Riding style
Speed
Flexibility
Upper back mobility
Injury history
How aggressive your position is
Some riders are more comfortable slightly narrower than their shoulders. Others need a bit more space to breathe and relax their traps.
What I See in the Fit Studio
When bars are too wide:
Riders collapse into their shoulders
Elbows flare excessively
Neck pain increases
When bars are too narrow:
Wrists angle outward
Breathing feels tight
Upper traps stay constantly engaged
The goal isn’t to chase a trend. It’s to find a width that:
Lets your elbows bend naturally
Keeps your wrists neutral
Allows you to breathe comfortably
Maintains control at speed
Comfortable riders stay aero longer than tense riders.
So… Should You Go Narrower?
If you’re a road rider averaging higher speeds and your current bars feel wide, a small reduction (1–2 cm) may improve comfort and aerodynamics.
If you ride gravel or trails, stability usually matters more than shaving a few watts.
And if you’re pain-free and stable now? There may be no reason to change anything.
The Takeaway - IT DEPENDS!
Handlebar width isn’t about what’s trending.
Road → narrower can improve aerodynamics.
Gravel/MTB → wider improves control.
Too wide or too narrow → both can cause discomfort.
The best width is the one that lets you relax your upper body and stay strong late into the ride.
