Bike Fitting and Performance Education:
🚴♂️ Shorter Cranks: Trend or True Upgrade?
Shorter crank arms have become one of the most talked-about trends in bike fitting. You’ll see pros riding them and brands pushing shorter options. But for most riders, the truth is simple:shorter cranks can help — but they’re rarely a necessity.
Do Shorter Cranks Make You Faster?
From a performance standpoint, research consistently showslittle to no change in power output or efficiencywhen comparing common crank lengths (165–175 mm). Riders generally produce the same watts at the same effort, regardless of crank length. (PMC)
In short: switching to shorter cranks doesn’t magically give you free speed.
Cadence Tends to Increase
One consistent finding is that riders naturally choose aslightly higher cadencewhen using shorter cranks. This happens without an increase in heart rate or perceived effort, and it doesn’t negatively affect efficiency. (PMC)
Clinically, this often means smoother pedaling and less tendency to “grind” big gears.
Reduced Joint Stress Is the Real Benefit
This is where shorter cranks can be genuinely useful.
Shorter cranks reduce how much your hips and knees have to bend at the top of the pedal stroke. Studies show meaningful reductions in joint range of motion, which can lower joint stress without hurting performance. (PMC)
This is especially helpful for riders with:
Knee or hip discomfort
Limited hip mobility
A more aggressive riding position
Many ridersfeelbetter on shorter cranks not because they’re stronger — but because the movement is easier on their joints.
So… Do You Need Shorter Cranks?
Most riders don’tneedthem.
If you’re comfortable, pain-free, and happy with your position, changing crank length may not move the needle much. But if you feel cramped at the top of the stroke or struggle with joint discomfort, shorter cranks can be a smart fit adjustment.
The Takeaway
Shorter cranks aren’t magic — but they’re not hype either.
Power stays about the same
Cadence usually increases slightly
Joint stress often decreases
Like most fit changes, they work bestwhen there’s a clear reason, not just because they’re trending.
