Over the next few months of this newsletter, I will be diving into separate pain-points that I commonly see as a Bike Fitter and give you some tips on how to start addressing them to keep you moving forward on your cycling journey!

🧭 The Pelvis–Saddle Connection: Comfort and Power on the Bike

Where You Should Feel Pressure? 🤔

Your pelvis is the foundation of your position on the bike…

  • On road and gravel bikes, pressure should rest mainly on your sit bones (ischial tuberosities) — not the soft tissue.

  • Triathletes/time-trial riderslean forward more, sopressure shifts slightly toward the front of the pelvis but should still avoid the perineum.

  • Mountain bikersvary position often, but when seatedshould feel even support under the sit bones.

A recent study showed that pelvic rotation directly changes where pressure builds — upright riders experienced greater perineal load than forward-leaning ones (García-López et al., Sports Eng., 2023).

Common Pelvic Complaints

Most saddle discomfort starts with how your pelvis interacts with the seat:

  • Saddle sores/chafing →too much movement or friction from unstable pelvic contact.

  • Numbness or “pins and needles”excessive forward pelvic tilt, saddle too high, or narrow saddle nose causing soft-tissue compression.

  • Low-back or one-sided painuneven pelvic pressure or height differences between sides.

In essence: if you feel pressure in soft tissue instead of bone, something in your setup needs attention.

Quick Fixes for Pelvic Discomfort

✅ Level your saddle: Keep the nose close to horizontal. A slight downward tilt is fine but too much increases forward slide and soft-tissue pressure.

✅ Check height and fore/aft: A high saddle causes rocking; too low increases posterior tilt and back strain.

✅ Dial in saddle width: It should match your sit-bone spacing.

✅ Work on hip/core control: A stable pelvis reduces pressure shifts and keeps you balanced through the pedal stroke.

✅ Adjust handlebar reach: Too long or low can force anterior tilt and perineal compression.

How Pelvic Position Impacts Performance

The pelvis connects leg power to the rest of the body. A stable, well-aligned pelvis means:

🔥Better power transfer— less wasted motion, smoother force delivery.

🔥Improved comfort and endurance— you can hold position longer with less fatigue.

🔥Enhanced glute activation— a slightly anterior pelvic tilt can open hip angles and improve wattage output at the same effort.

A 2024 systematic review found that optimizing pelvic and hip angles significantly affects cycling efficiency and performance (Ferguson et al., J Sports Sci, 2024).

⚙️ Pro Tip: How to Find Your Ideal Saddle Width

You don’t need fancy tools to estimate saddle width —just a piece of cardboard and some chalk.

  1. Place the cardboard on a carpeted step or low stool.

  2. Sit down barefoot with your feet elevated slightly (so your weight is on your sit bones).

  3. Stand up and look for two small indents — those are your sit bones.

  4. Measure the center-to-center distance and add 20–30 mm to find your ideal saddle width.

This quick test helps ensure the saddle supports your bones — not soft tissue — which means better comfort, power, and endurance.
