A message from the lead fitter - Tyler Holt PT, DPT, CSCS
✅ I am beyond excited to begin the transition to Divergent Rehab & Wellnessas a FULL-TIME physical therapist and bike fitter! This transition will mean new services for the cycling community including strength training, group rides, hands-on recovery work, as well as more times to accommodate fittings.
✅ This transition was a long-time coming and one that ultimately will benefit YOU! In my previous position, I inevitably working for the insurance companies that patients had, and now in this new role, I only have one priority…getting YOU back to what YOU want to do!
✅ Over the next few newsletters, we will highlight some of the additional options that will be available in the coming months…so stay tuned!!

🚴♀️ Balancing Comfort and Aerodynamics: Tailoring Bike Fits for Road Cyclists and Triathletes 🚴♂️
In the pursuit of speed, cyclists often prioritize aerodynamics. However, the foundation of an effective aerodynamic position is comfort. Without it, maintaining an aero posture becomes unsustainable, negating potential performance gains. Additionally, having a thorough conversation about the type of riding, event or phase of training they are in will greatly impact the style of fitting we perform.
Road Cyclists vs. Triathletes: Distinct Fitting Approaches
✅ Road Cyclists: Typically engage in varied terrains and group rides. Their bike fits emphasize a balance between comfort, power output, and bike handling. The position allows for frequent changes in posture, aiding in muscle relief and adaptability.
✅ Triathletes: Focus on solo efforts, aiming for maximum aerodynamic efficiency over extended periods. Their fits often involve a more aggressive forward-leaning position, utilizing aero bars to reduce frontal area. However, this can increase strain on the neck, shoulders, and lower back if not properly adjusted.
The Primacy of Comfort in Aerodynamic Gains
A 2021 study in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living simulated the trade-offs of aerodynamic vs. comfortable positions over a long-distance effort. The findings are below
✅ At 35 km/h (21.7 mph), riders in aero positions saved up to 60W of drag.
✅ But if that aero position led to just a 5% drop in sustainable power due to discomfort, the advantage was mostly nullified over a longer duration (e.g., >60 minutes).

Key Insight: If you're riding above ~20 mph, the aerodynamic advantage can outweigh the discomfort penalty — but only if the position doesn’t significantly reduce your ability to sustain power or control the bike.

Conclusion
While aerodynamics play a significant role in cycling performance, they should not come at the expense of comfort. A well-fitted bike that prioritizes individual comfort can lead to better sustainability in aero positions, ultimately enhancing overall performance.
