Movement Health Tips
💡 Movement Health Tip: HIIT vs. Weight Training — Why Impact Control Matters
Not all workouts are created equal—and your body needs different tools to handle different types of stress.
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and weight training both build strength and fitness, but they challenge your body in very different ways:
🏃♂️ HIIT: Dynamic & Impact-Heavy
HIIT involves rapid bursts of movement—think jumping, sprinting, or fast-paced bodyweight exercises.
It demands:
Explosive control
Joint stability under impact
Coordination during fatigue
Poor impact control during HIIT can lead to stress on the knees, ankles, and lower back—especially if mobility or balance is lacking.
🏋️♀️ Weight Training: Load & Positional Strength
Weight training focuses more on:
Muscle control under load
Positional strength and tension
Proper form through slower, more deliberate movements
Without proper joint alignment or strength in key stabilizers (hips, core, shoulders), you risk breakdowns in form—and long-term wear and tear.
Bottom Line:
HIIT requires your body to absorb and redirect force quickly.
Weight training requires you to generate and maintain force under load.
Each demands a different level of control, coordination, and preparedness.
Not sure if your body is ready for one or the other—or both? A movement assessment can help identify where your strength and impact control may need support.
👉 Reply to this email to ask about our one-on-one movement evaluations and performance assessments—we’ll help you move better, train smarter, and avoid setbacks.
Pain Education
🧠 Pain Education: Not All Headaches Are Migraines
If you’ve ever had a pounding or tight headache and immediately thought “migraine,” you’re not alone. But not all headaches are migraines—and knowing the difference can make a big impact on your care and relief.
Two of the most common non-migraine headaches we see in the clinic are:
🔹Cervicogenic Headaches
These start in the neck—often due to poor posture, joint stiffness, or muscular tension—and refer pain into the head, temples, or behind the eye.
Common signs:
Headache on one side of the head
Starts in the neck or base of the skull
Neck stiffness or pain with movement
No aura or visual disturbances
Cervicogenic headaches are often misdiagnosed as migraines—but they respond extremely well to physical therapy focused on restoring neck mobility and improving posture.
🔹Tension-Type Headaches
These feel like a tight band or dull ache across the forehead or around the head. They’re often triggered by stress, fatigue, poor sleep, or jaw/neck tension.
Common signs:
Mild to moderate pressure (not throbbing)
Both sides of the head
May worsen throughout the day
No nausea or light sensitivity
Tension headaches are the most common type—and usually respond well to targeted manual therapy, stretching, stress management, and lifestyle adjustments.
🌀 What About Migraines?
Migraines are a more complex neurological condition. They can involve:
Throbbing, severe pain (often one-sided)
Nausea or vomiting
Sensitivity to light or sound
Aura (visual changes or sensory symptoms before the headache starts)
If you experience these symptoms, it’s worth consulting with both your primary care provider and a physical therapist. Many migraine sufferers also have coexisting tension or cervicogenic headaches—which we can help treat directly.
✅ The Good News:
You don’t have to just “deal with it.”
If your headaches are related to posture, neck tension, jaw tightness, or daily stress, a movement-based approach can often make a real difference.
👉 Reply to this email to schedule a consultation or ask whether physical therapy might help with your headaches.
